Acaydia School of Aesthetics LLC OSHA Standard 1910.178 Discussion Response

Please respond to  Laura

Looking at the OSHA standard 1910.178, trying to read and decipher everything it says is complicated enough. I am sure that is one of the reasons that the standard is violated so much because of the amount to detail and reading you have to do to figure what you need to do for the industrial trucks.  Another reason I am sure it is cited is the maintenance and training up keep for employers and employees to do. I can see where some employers skip on things because of the cost of the up keep on them. Most places offer on the job training for when it comes to powered industrial trucks, instead of spending the money and time for them to truly get certified to use them. I do not have any experience in dealing with powered industrial trucks in my workplace.

Arizona Christian University Horton Hears a Who Essay

1. Why is Horton labeled “deviant” in the story?

2. Use the three elements of constructionism to discuss Horton’s “deviance.”

Relativism – Discuss context as it relates to Horton’s “deviance.”

Subjectivism – How does Horton experience being labeled “deviant?”

Voluntarism – How does Horton express his free will in making the choice to save Whoville?

3. Use the symbolic interactionist perspective to explain the different responses to the dust speck in the story (what does the dust speck mean to the different characters). Note the consequences for the characters based on their interpretation of this symbol.

4. Consider labeling theory…

Which characters are the labelers? How are they depicted? How do they ensure that Horton is labeled “deviant (hint: a form of informal social control)?”

5. Chambliss’ legal reality theory suggests that those who enforce the law (police, prosecutors, judges) are essentially working to protect the interests…political, economic, moral…interests of those belonging to the dominant power structure. What we see here is that the powerless are not treated equally under the law (law in action/law on the books).

Who are the enforcers in the story? Why do you think it’s so easy for them to condemn Horton to being “roped & caged?” Can you think of a current social issue where a powerless group has been demonized by the powerful & mainstream thinkers who don’t question the those in power? How likely is it that Jane Kangaroo would have been treated the same as Horton? Explain your answer.

6. Ultimately, the Whos save themselves by rising up & being heard. Do you believe that speaking out, ie. protesting for stricter gun control, professional football players taking a knee during the National Anthem, Black Lives Matter… can make a difference the U.S. today? Please note that these groups are often viewed as social “deviants.”

Florida State University SYG Current Event Discussion

Each student is required to submit one brief report about a recent (post-2015) local, national, or global event. This report should be submitted during an appropriate week per our course calendar (e.g., a report on school vouchers should be submitted during Week 9). In this report, you should describe the event and analyze it by applying the three major sociological perspectives outlined in the textbook–functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism–to the event.

You will supplement your understanding of the event or situation by searching for popular news articles and opinion pieces covering the topic. I suggest you search popular news outlets like the New York Times and HuffingtonPost, but it is possible that more local outlets like the Tallahassee Democrat will also be helpful.

Let’s keep the school voucher example rolling. If this was your chosen topic, you would locate a handful of sources discussing the topic – perhaps an opinion piece or blog post by a concerned parent, an article published by the New York Times, a statement released by a school district, etc. – and familiarize yourself with the issue at hand. Then, you would (1) briefly describe the topic, (2) explain why/how the topic contributes to a social problem in society, and (3) discuss how a functionalist, conflict theorist, and symbolic interactionist perspective would each inform understanding of the issue.
