Mr. Wallace,

Aleah is a seventh grader who had received Tier 2 interventions for most of the sixth grade. By the end of the year, she had shown progress academically and socially and, was moved into the Tier 1 universal group. This year, however, Aleah has already been sent to the principal’s office twice for pushing other students in the classroom and has received several detentions for swearing in class. The teachers are concerned with her academics so far and want to prevent future behavioral and academic problems.

Unfortunately, this is a typical case in many classrooms today. However, students such as Aleah benefit from the implementation of MTSS. Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is a framework that helps educators provide academic and behavioral strategies for students with various needs (What is MTSS, 2022). Instead of the “waiting for failure” assessment model of pre-IDEA days, MTSS takes a proactive approach to identify students with academic or behavioral needs. Early assessment and intervention for these students can help them catch up with their peers sooner(What is MTSS, 2022).

Furthermore, academic intervention programs are developed to proactively identify and address difficulties through progressively intense intervention. These intervention programs aim to improve student achievement using research-based interventions matched to the instructional need and level of students. Schools that do not implement a systematic intervention framework risk not providing students with consistent interventions to address areas of need (Stephen, 2017).

Furthermore, assessments play an integral role in implementing MTSS. The data we gain from the variety of assessments we utilize during our MTSS process guides our decisions on best serving our students (Best Practices, 2022). Therefore, I will actively guide the leadership team in creating an evidence-based assessment system. The team will use the team-initiated problem-solving approach to develop an assessment protocol. The team-initiated problem-solving process is an evidence-based approach to effective teaming for school teams charged with data-based decision-making in the context of a problem-solving model (Brown-Chidsey &Bickford, 2016). TIPS is ideal for a system-level team effort because it emphasizes the use of data in identifying and defining a problem and using an action plan to solve problems (Brown-Chidsey & Bickford, 2016).
